Opioid education for arthroscopic shoulder surgery had no effect on consumption: A RCT
Arthroscopy Jan 29, 2021
Campbell KA, Baron SL, Bloom DA, et al. - This study was attempted to ascertain if a pre-operative educational video will impact opioid consumption following arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Researchers further explored whether this intervention affects pain or satisfaction levels following surgery. A single-center randomized controlled trial was designed to randomize opioid-naïve patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair into one of two groups. In the analysis, 88 patients were included in the study (40 control, 48 experimental). The data exhibited that individuals who viewed the educational video did not take fewer opioids or have differences in VAS pain or satisfaction with pain control following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. The results considered that orthopedic surgeons must evaluate other ways to effectively decrease opioid consumption after surgery without compromising pain control.
