Odontoid fractures in combination with C1 fractures in the elderly treated by combined anterior odontoid and transarticular C1/2 screw fixation
Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Aug 01, 2018
Josten C, et al. - Authors assessed the risk factors of accompanied C1 fractures in elderly patients with type II odontoid fractures (OF) and evaluated the complication rate and the outcomes of patients after combined anterior odontoid and transarticular C1/2 screw fixation (AOTAF). In all patients with CI, they observed atlanto-odontoid osteoarthritis (AOO). A low-energy fall was the main cause of trauma. As per data, 1 year after surgery moderate pain levels and promising satisfaction levels were noted. However, they saw an association of AOTAF with a high rate of postoperative dysphagia, which resolves in the majority of patients due to conservative management.
