Ocular surface involvement in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 syndrome

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology May 13, 2020

Moramarco A, Sacchetti M, Franzone F, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to assess ocular surface morphological and functional changes in patients (n = 28) with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and healthy individuals (14). All candidates had a medical history collection, a complete ophthalmological examination including slit lamp exam and evaluation of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), corneal sensitivity, and lacrimal function (Schirmer test and fluorescein tear break-up time test). Patients with NF1 reported a substantial decrease in FTBUT compared with healthy individuals. There was no significant difference between the two groups on nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor tear levels and conjunctival expression of their receptors. Findings showed the presence of ocular surface changes in patients with NF-1 including decrease in tear stability and corneal sensitivity. In addition, patients with NF1 displayed changes of corneal endothelial cells’ density.
