Obesity and the importance of cardiovascular disease surveillance after colorectal cancer
JAMA Jul 17, 2019
Passarelli MN, et al. - A substantial cardiovascular disease comorbidity is observed among many colorectal cancer survivors in the United States. As per data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-Medicare population, diagnosis of cardiovascular disease in the decade following a cancer diagnosis is expected in more than half of those with primary stage I to III colorectal cancer after age 65 years in the United States. Relative to the general population, colorectal cancer survivors show increased cardiovascular disease risk that is likely be related to multiple shared risk factors, many of which are precursors or consequences of obesity. This work also suggests concerns regarding the potential for cardiac toxic effects from cancer treatment.
