Number of cardiologists per cardiovascular beds and in-hospital mortality for acute heart failure: A nationwide study in Japan
Journal of the American Heart Association Sep 16, 2019
Kanaoka K, Okayama S, Nakai M, et al. - Researchers undertook this cross-sectional analysis to examine the link the number of cardiologists per cardiology beds for treating patients with acute heart failure (HF) and in-hospital mortality, using the Japanese Registry of All Cardiac and Vascular Diseases Diagnosis Procedure Combination discharge database. They obtained data of HF patients on emergency admission from April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2014. They calculated adjusted odds ratios for in-hospital mortality, using multilevel mixed-effect logistics regression. Findings revealed lower 30-day mortality and higher prescription rates for guideline-based treatments of HF among patients with HF who were admitted to hospitals with larger numbers of cardiologists per cardiovascular bed.
