Novel transcatheter mitral valve prosthesis for patients with severe mitral annular calcification
Journal of the American College of Cardiology Sep 16, 2019
Sorajja P, Gössl M, Babaliaros V, et al. - Whether transcatheter mitral valve replacement can be performed using an anatomically designed mitral prosthesis in patients with severe mitral annular calcification (MAC) was investigated in this study. Researchers used general anesthesia and guidance from transesophageal echocardiography and fluoroscopy to perform transapical delivery of the valve in 9 patients (77 ± 6 years of age; 5 men). Findings revealed the feasibility of performing transcatheter mitral valve replacement with a dedicated prosthesis in patients with severe MAC and this treatment strategy could provide mitral regurgitation relief with symptom improvement.
