Nondaily smokers’ changes in cigarette consumption with very low-nicotine-content cigarettes: A randomized double-blind clinical trial
JAMA Oct 10, 2018
Shiffman S, et al. - In this randomized double-blind clinical trial, researchers compared cigarette consumption in intermittent smokers (ITS) receiving very low-nicotine-content cigarettes (VLNCCs) or identical normal-nicotine-content cigarettes (NNCCs). They conducted this trial from June 2015 to July 2017 at a single US site. Among ITS, switching to VLNCCs caused substantial smoking decline. However, it did not significantly increase abstinence. Response to a VLNCC intervention proposes that nicotine-seeking motivates ITS’ smoking.
