Long A, et al. - Researchers here aim to evaluate non-traditional risk factors for atherosclerotic disease and to inform physicians of their potential danger, particularly in vulnerable patient populations. In this work, several non-traditional factors (Vasculitides, as well as immunologic medications used to treat these patients; specific types of cancer and some therapies used to treat cancer; heavy alcohol use; pregnancy; infections such as pneumonia and sepsis; HIV infection) were found to be associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis and acute coronary syndrome.
