New insights of tricuspid regurgitation: A large-scale prospective cohort study
European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging Aug 15, 2020
Vieitez JM, Monteagudo JM, Mahia P, et al. - Researchers used a large cohort in this prospective study to assess the burden of tricuspid regurgitation (TR), and to ascertain the right ventricle involvement of patients with TR. They also investigated the characteristics of isolated TR. This study involved consecutive patients undergoing an echocardiographic study in 10 centres and all studies with significant TR (at least moderate) were chosen. In 6% of studies, significant TR was identified. In 69.6%, 25.5%, 3.9%, and 1.0% of patients, the presence of moderate TR, severe TR, massive TR, and torrential TR was identified, respectively. Dilated right ventricle was found in 81.7% of patients with massive/torrential TR, in 55.9% and 29.3% patients with severe TR and moderate TR, respectively. The most common aetiology was mitral or aortic valve disease. Overall, findings showed that significant TR represents a prevalent entity and an indication for valve intervention was present in a high proportion of these patients. A high surgical risk was observed in more than a half of patients with severe, massive, or torrential TR. Massive/torrential TR may have implications concerning selection as well as monitoring patients for percutaneous management.
