New electrocardiographic score for the prediction of atrial fibrillation: The MVP ECG risk score (morphology-voltage-P-wave duration)

Annals of Noninvasive Electrocardiology Jun 16, 2019

Alexander B, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to build an electrocardiographic risk score for new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia. The study sample consisted of 676 patients (mean age was 65 years) without previous AF undergoing coronary angiography. Participants in the study were divided into 3 risk groups and followed until the development of AF or last available clinical appointment. According to results, the high- and intermediate-risk groups were more likely than the low-risk group to develop AF. Compared to the intermediate- and low-risk groups, the high-risk group had a significantly shorter mean time to development of AF. The data presented in this work showed a simple risk score consisting of easy-to-measure electrocardiographic variables can assist in predicting new-onset AF. To evaluate the ability of this risk score to predict AF in other populations, further validation studies will be required.
