Neuropsychiatric symptoms in severe dementia: Associations with specific cognitive domains the Cache County Dementia Progression study

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Apr 13, 2019

Rozum WJ, et al. - Researchers examined a population-based sample of 56 individuals with severe dementia (85.7% Alzheimer's type; 67.9% female) for the prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) and cognitive correlates in severe dementia. In this sample, 98% of the patients showed a least one symptom, making NPS common in severe dementia, with delusions, apathy, agitation/aggression and aberrant motor behavior being the most common, impacting 50% or more of patients. More severe neuropsychiatric symptoms were noted in correlation to impairment in specific cognitive domains in severe dementia. They suggest that agitation and aggressive behaviors can be targeted via environmental manipulations to decrease processing demands in those with severe dementia.
