Network properties among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men vary by race
AIDS and Behavior Feb 09, 2019
Zarwell M, et al. - Considering that the HIV burden among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) is possibly related to variations in network characteristics of the individual’s social and sexual network, researchers investigated variations in network properties among 188 Black and 295 White GBM recruited in New Orleans during the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance in 2014. White participants exhibited larger networks, possessed known network members longer, and reported more substance use within networks. Compared to White GBM, Black participants reported networks with fewer men and younger members. These findings suggest differences in network properties among GBM by race in New Orleans which may inform prevention interventions.
