Neovascularization in fellow eye of unilateral neovascular age-related macular degeneration according to different drusen types
American Journal of Ophthalmology Aug 05, 2019
Lee J, Choi S, Lee CS, et al. - According to fellow eye (FE) drusen type, researchers studied the incidence of FE neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in unilateral nAMD patients. Four hundred thirty-four consecutive patients with naïve nAMD were enrolled between January 2013 and June 2016. They chose 280 eligible patients with treatment-naïve, unilateral nAMD for analysis. Data reported that the 5-year incidence of FE nAMD was 20.9%. The multivariate Cox regression hazard model showed older age and drusen type were significant. Compared with no drusen group, pachydrusen was not shown to be an important risk factor. According to this retrospective cohort study, the incidence of FE nAMD with respect to the type of drusen was significantly different. The highest risk of neovascular AMD was soft drusen plus subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDD), followed by soft drusen only and SDD only.
