Neovascular age-related macular degeneration: Intraocular inflammatory cytokines in the poor responder to ranibizumab treatment

Clinical Ophthalmology Oct 05, 2018

Pongsachareonnont P, et al. - In the aqueous fluid of patients who have neovascular age-related macular degeneration and respond poorly to ranibizumab, experts evaluated the levels of interleukin (IL)-6, vascular endothelial growth factor-A, platelet-derived growth factor, placental growth factor (PLGF), and other cytokines. Intraocular levels of angiogenesis cytokines were not reduced by switching from ranibizumab to aflibercept, but it did result in an improvement of central subfield thickness. Poor responders to ranibizumab had higher PLGF levels. Findings suggested the probability that the stage of choroidal neovascularization is related to the response of lesions to medication.
