Neighbourhoods, networks and pre-exposure prophylaxis awareness: A multilevel analysis of a sample of young black men who have sex with men
Sexually Transmitted Infections Dec 10, 2018
Chen YT, et al. - As in the USA, young black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) represent a subgroup that has the highest HIV incidence among the overall population, and neighborhood and network factors may relate to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness, researchers examined if neighbourhood and network characteristics are associated with PrEP awareness in this population. For this purpose, data collected from a sample of 618 YBMSM in Chicago (2013–2014) was used. Results suggest a possible influence of neighborhood and network characteristics on PrEP awareness in YBMSM. Greater PrEP awareness was evident in correlation with higher neighbourhood-level educational attainment and greater primary care density; less PrEP awareness was noted in relation with greater neighbourhood alcohol outlet density. Greater PrEP awareness was also observed among participants in association with sexual network members residing in the same neighbourhood as the participants and discussions around avoiding HIV acquisition with confidants.
