Nationwide epidemiologic study of norovirus-related hospitalization among Japanese older adults
BMC Infectious Diseases May 15, 2019
Ohfuji S, et al. - Performing a nationwide two-step query focusing on 4,184 hospital departments out of 17,575, researchers assessed the number of inpatients with norovirus gastroenteritis and related deaths among Japanese older adults. In Japan, the estimated numbers of inpatients with norovirus gastroenteritis were 31,800 in the administrative year 2012, 21,600 in the administrative year 2013, and 15,700 in the administrative year 2014. In each administrative year, they estimated around 600 deaths were related to norovirus gastroenteritis. Higher age, living in long-term care facilities, underlying illnesses such as chronic respiratory diseases, and complications such as aspiration pneumonia were the factors linked with death. As the rate of regular norovirus testing was low, so the actual number of norovirus inpatient would be higher than the estimated.
