National trends, sex, management and outcomes of patients hospitalized for myocarditis
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 16, 2019
Shah Z, et al. - In order to gather more information on patient features, healthcare utilization and outcomes of myocarditis related hospitalizations, researchers used Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database and assessed the outcomes of patients hospitalized with myocarditis from a large diverse, multicentric, nationwide cohort. This study included 27129 hospitalizations involving adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) having a primary discharge diagnosis of myocarditis. They excluded the patients who received a diagnosis of myocardial infarction or coronary syndromes (including unstable angina) during the same hospitalization. Throughout the study years, an increase in the myocarditis related hospitalizations was reported. The young population with no significant co-morbidities was mostly affected by myocarditis related hospitalizations. A high risk for myocarditis associated complications and in-hospital mortality was observed among females.
