National trends in hospitalizations and outcomes in patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy

Ram P, et al. - Researchers analyzed discharge data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS) from 2002 through 2014 to obtain data from patients aged ≥ 18 years with diagnosis of “alcoholic cardiomyopathy” to assess the trends in hospitalization among these patients. As per outcomes, although an overall decrease in admissions is evident among patients with AC, there is an increase in the percentage of patients with high-risk characteristics such as smoking, depression and drug abuse. Patients aged 45 and older were most affected. Causes for admission were dominated by cardiovascular etiologies.
