National trends in active surveillance for prostate cancer: validation of medicare claims-based algorithms
Urology Jul 12, 2018
Modi PK, et al. - Experts ascertained the real-world use of active surveillance for prostate cancer. For low-risk prostate cancer, active surveillance is a preferred management option, yet its use outside of high-volume institutions is poorly understood. Findings suggested an increase in the use of surveillance for men with incident prostate cancer from 2007 to 2014, nationally. Nonetheless, depending on the algorithm used, there was a large decrease in the rate of prostate cancer diagnosis and an increased or stable rate in the use of active surveillance. A confirmatory prostate biopsy was seen in less than 25% of men on active surveillance. To identify active surveillance, performance of claims-based algorithms was described.
