National trends and 30-day readmission rates for next-day-discharge TAVR: An analysis from the Nationwide Readmissions Database, 2012–2016
American Heart Journal Oct 23, 2020
Yerasi C, Tripathi B, Wang Y, et al. - Researchers analyzed underlying trends as well as readmissions of next-day discharge transcatheter aortic valve replacement [NDD-TAVR] in this analysis from the Nationwide Readmissions Database from 2012 to 2016. NDD (next-day discharge) was defined as any discharge within 1 day of admission. There were 49,742 TAVR procedures, of these, 3,104 were NDD. Anemia, baseline conduction disease, cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, neoplastic disorders, and discharge to facility, all were identified as significant predictors of readmission. Findings showed an increment in the percentage of NDD-TAVR over the years; however, readmission rates continued to be the same, with a higher rate of conduction abnormality-associated hospitalizations in 2016. Further prevention of 30-day readmissions may be achieved by careful discharge planning that involves identification of baseline factors that predict readmission as well as knowledge of causes.
