Myocardial scar and mortality in chronic aortic regurgitation
Journal of the American Heart Association Dec 05, 2020
Malahfji M, Senapati A, Tayal B, et al. - Researchers used cardiac magnetic resonance to determine the association of myocardial scarring to mortality in chronic aortic regurgitation (AR). Patients suffering from moderate or greater AR were included in this study. All‐cause mortality was the primary outcome. A follow-up was performed in 3,92 patients (median age 62 years), and 78.1% were men, and 25.8% had bicuspid valves. In 131 (33.4%) patients, the presence of myocardial scar was evident. Findings revealed an independent association of myocardial scar with a 2.5‐fold increase risk in mortality in patients with AR. In patients with scarring, a decrease in death risk was observed in relation to aortic valve replacement.
