Myocardial involvement in patients with histologically diagnosed cardiac sarcoidosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of gross pathological images from autopsy or cardiac transplantation cases
Journal of the American Heart Association May 15, 2019
Okasha O, et al. - Researchers focused on the involvement of the myocardium in histologically diagnosed cardiac sarcoidosis, via a systematic review and meta-analysis of 33 eligible articles with gross pathological images of 49 unique hearts. They found that >90% of cases had left ventricular (LV) subepicardial, LV multifocal, septal, and right ventricular free wall involvement. They also found that 0% to 6% of cases demonstrated the following patterns of myocardial involvement: absence of gross LV myocardial involvement, isolated LV midmyocardial involvement, isolated LV subendocardial involvement, isolated LV transmural involvement, absence of septal involvement, or isolated involvement of only one LV level. Therefore, a frequent occurrence of certain features of myocardial involvement, as well as rare or never occurrence of others, was reported in this study.
