Myocardial fibrosis predicts adverse outcome after MitraClip implantation
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions May 26, 2019
Velu JF, et al. - Researchers investigated myocardial fibrosis as a predictor of outcome in mitral regurgitation (MR) patients undergoing MitraClip implantation, as well as its utility in clinical decision making. Using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) through late gadolinium enhancement, they assessed myocardial fibrosis before MitraClip implantation. With a mean age 80 ± 9 years, 23 patients underwent preprocedural CMR. They found that 55% of the patients with degenerative MR and 64% of the patients with functional MR had myocardial fibrosis. Adverse outcome was predicted by the presence of myocardial fibrosis, as demonstrated in this hypothesis-generating study. In 69% of the patients with myocardial fibrosis and 11% of the patients without myocardial fibrosis an adverse outcome was seen.
