Mortality in acromegaly decreased in the last decade: A systematic review and meta-analysis
European Journal of Endocrinology May 18, 2018
Bolfi F, et al. - The researchers carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the acromegaly mortality rates with those expected for the general population from studies published before and after 2008. For this investigation, the number of deaths observed in acromegaly was compared with the expected mortality for the general population (O/E). They used the following electronic databases as the data sources: Embase, Medline and Lilacs. The findings suggested that mortality in acromegaly was normalized with biochemical control and decreased in the last decade with the more frequent use of somatostatin analogues (SAs) as adjuvant therapy. Data reported that increased life expectancy has been correlated with more deaths due to cancer.
