Morbidity and mortality after major liver resection in patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Surgery Mar 15, 2019
Franken LC, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers examined morbidity and mortality rates after major hepatectomy in patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma via analyzing 51 studies representing 4,634 patients. In addition, they sought for differences in outcome regarding geographic location and hospital volume. Outcomes revealed pooled 30-day and 90-day mortality of 5% and 9%, respectively and pooled overall morbidity and severe morbidity of 57% and 40%, respectively. This indicates high morbidity and mortality rates after major hepatectomy for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. Compared to the Asian series, the Western series exhibited a higher mortality rate, even when corrected for hospital volume. Findings emphasize on standardized reporting of outcomes.
