Monetary reinforcement for self-monitoring of blood glucose among young people with type 1 diabetes: Evaluating effects on psychosocial functioning

Diabetic Medicine Nov 17, 2019

Wong JJ, Addala A, Naranjo D, et al. - Among 60 young people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) researchers analyzed the auxiliary psychosocial impacts of a monetary reinforcement intervention targeting self-monitoring of blood glucose. For this investigation, they randomized young people with T1D, HbA1c concentrations between 58 and 119 mmol/mol (7.5–13.0%), and average self-monitoring of blood glucose < 4 times per day to either enhanced usual care or a 24-week intervention of monetary rewards for self-monitoring of blood glucose and associated behaviours (eg, uploading glucose meters). The results of this study indicate predominantly positive impacts on psychosocial outcomes of monetary reinforcement interventions, although effects varied by outcome and time point. Although early changes in diabetes distress were identified for all those receiving the treatment, improvements in other areas varied depending on the baseline level of psychosocial difficulty. Incorporating psychosocial interventions over time can support and maintain effects.
