Mild physiologic hyperglycemia induces hepatic insulin resistance in healthy normal glucose tolerant subjects
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Mar 06, 2019
Tripathy D, et al. - In 16 healthy normal glucose tolerant (NGT) subjects, researchers studied the impact of sustained physiologic hyperglycemia (similar to that observed in type 2 diabetic individuals) on endogenous (primarily reflects hepatic) glucose production (EGP). Investigators found that sustained physiological hyperglycemia increased the rate of production of basal hepatic glucose for as little as 48 hours and induced hepatic insulin resistance in healthy subjects of NGT, providing evidence of the role of glucotoxicity in increasing production of hepatic glucose in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
