International Journal of Infectious Diseases Feb 04, 2020
Farooq HZ, Davies E, Ahmad S, et al. - In Saudi Arabia, emergence of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was observed in 2012 that caused an epidemic in the Middle East. Researchers here reported the results regarding MERS surveillance from 2012 to 2019 from the Public Health England (PHE) Manchester, one of the two PHE centers in the UK that conduct testing for MERS-CoV. Retrospective data of travelers returning from the Middle East fitting the PHE MERS case definition were obtained. An in-house RT-PCR assay was used to test 426 respiratory samples from 264 patients for respiratory viruses and MERS-CoV. They identified no cases of MERS. Influenza infection was detected in the majority of patients for which oseltamivir treatment was indicated and isolation warranted. For diagnosing respiratory viruses, they identified sputum samples as the most helpful with a 100% diagnostic yield from patients with multiple samples.
