Microbial keratitis in corneal transplants: A 12-year analysis
Clinical Ophthalmology Nov 03, 2020
Griffin B, Walkden A, Okonkwo A, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to examine the frequencies, trends, and in vitro drug susceptibilities of the causative pathogens in corneal transplant microbial infections in Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Between 2004 and 2015, corneal scrape results recorded by the microbiology service were extracted from an established database. In total, 1508 grafts had been performed at the centre in this period. Seventy-two episodes of graft microbial keratitis have been identified from 66 eyes that had undergone keratoplasty procedures. Data reported that 93% of microbial keratitis episodes occurred in penetrating keratoplasty procedures and 6% in deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty procedures. The largest collection of corneal transplant infections found within the UK is listed in this paper. This finding can assist clinicians in predicting possible causative organisms for microbial keratitis and help in the selection of antibiotics.
