Metabolic syndrome and risk of Parkinson disease: A nationwide cohort study
PLoS Medicine Sep 07, 2018
Nam GE, et al. - Using large-scale cohort data for the whole South Korean population, researchers attempted to determine whether metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components were correlated with the risk of incident Parkinson disease (PD). For this investigation, they involved health checkup data of 17,163,560 people aged ≥40 years provided by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) of South Korea between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2012. Participants in the study were followed up until December 31, 2015. It was noted that individuals with MetS had a 24% higher risk of incident PD than individuals without MetS, and each MetS component was positively related to PD risk. The findings from the present study suggested that MetS and its components might be risk factors of PD development.
