Metabolic surgery for the treatment of type 2 diabetes: A network metanalysis of randomized controlled trials
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Apr 08, 2020
Cresci B, et al. - In this investigation involving 1,351 patients, researchers contrasted different types of metabolic surgery (MS) with medical therapy (MT) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D). According to this network‐meta‐analysis (NMA), mean baseline BMI was 36.8 kg/m2. MS has been associated with significantly higher decreases in HbA1c, FPG and diabetes remission compared with MT. The data presented in this work showed a significant reduction of HbA1c with one‐anastomosis gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy in the NMA. MS is an interesting option for the treatment of T2D, although additional data are required to demonstrate its long-term effectiveness. Present data are not adequate to change current guidelines, which find MS to be a possible treatment for T2D with a BMI over 35 kg/m2.
