Meta-analysis of the usefulness of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
The American Journal of Cardiology Dec 09, 2020
Aldaas OM, Lupercio F, Darden D, et al. - Researchers sought to gain clarity regarding the role of catheter ablation in heart failure (HF) with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). For this purpose, they analyzed studies comparing atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence at one year following catheter ablation of AF in patients with HFpEF vs patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), via a systematic review and meta-analysis. Overall six studies including 1,505 patients were analyzed. Patients with HFpEF, vs those with HFrEF, had similar recurrence of AF one year post-ablation on or off antiarrhythmic drugs. In the HFpEF group, a significantly shorter fluoroscopy time was reported, but procedure time or peri-procedural adverse events did not differ significantly between groups. Significantly less mortality was noted in HFpEF patients. According to the findings, the safety as well as the efficacy of catheter ablation of AF in maintaining sinus rhythm seemed to be the same between patients with HFpEF vs those with HFrEF.
