Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on atrial fibrillation ablation in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
Clinical Cardiology Sep 07, 2018
Smer A, et al. - In atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), researchers compared the efficacy of catheter ablation (CA) to medical therapy by searching the literature for randomized clinical trials comparing CA to medical therapy in this population. They analyzed data from 6 trials with a total of 775 patients. Outcomes suggest that CA is a better treatment option vs medical therapy for these patients, as it significantly improved LVEF, quality of life, and functional capacity and resulted in less HF hospital readmissions, and death from any cause. However, the applicability of these findings in terms of the very specific patients enrolled in these trials.
