Meta-analysis comparing mitral valve repair vs replacement for degenerative mitral regurgitation across all ages
The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 11, 2018
Jung JC, et al. - Researchers performed a literature search of five electronic databases to identify studies that assessed the results of mitral valve repair (MVr) vs mitral valve replacement (MVR) in patients with degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR); they wanted to determine the optimal treatment according to the patient's age. The main emphasis was on all-cause mortality; early mortality and freedom from reoperation were also assessed. According to the mean age of the study population, they carried out a meta-regression analysis and subgroup analysis. They selected 12 retrospective studies (2,950 and 1,252 patients in the MVr and MVR groups, respectively). In this study, MVr vs MVR was found to be beneficial in terms of all-cause mortality in patients with degenerative MR, regardless of patients’ age.
