Mean platelet volume predicts survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and type 2 diabetes
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Apr 12, 2019
Yin JB, et al. - In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), researchers examined the clinical significance of mean platelet volume (MPV). In this retrospective study involving 331 patients with HCC, 165 with T2DM and 166 without, T2DM patients had lower levels of MPV vs patients without T2DM. In addition, T2DM was differentiated significantly from non-T2DM by the MPV levels. For patients with T2DM, overall survival in patients with low MPV levels was significantly shorter vs patients with high MPV levels. Overall, the investigators concluded that reduced MPV in HCC and T2DM patients was a prognostic factor for poor outcome.
