Mapping the global endemicity and clinical burden of Plasmodium vivax, 2000–17: A spatial and temporal modelling study
The Lancet Jun 24, 2019
Battle KE, et al. - Via a spatial and temporal modelling study, researchers intended to determine the global endemicity and clinical burden of malaria by presenting the first global maps of P vivax clinical burden from 2000 to 2017. Zero P vivax cases during the study period were seen in Europe, and worldwide rates have seen declines, including the Americas, Western Pacific, and South East Asia. However, in the past five years, decline rates have plateaued for many countries, with a rise seen in politically and economically unstable regions. Though there has been substantial progress worldwide, areas of elevated burden signaled the potential for challenges that are more than was assumed on the way to malaria elimination. Optimization of diagnosis and treatment where P vivax has the most impact could be informed by global monitoring systems.
