Management and outcomes among patients with sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma: A population-based analysis
Cancer Aug 01, 2019
Wu L, Tsilimigras DI, Farooq A, et al. - From National Cancer Data Base, researchers examined data of patients diagnosed with sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from 2004 through 2015 to assess their management and outcomes. One hundred four patients with sarcomatoid HCC and 312 patients with conventional HCC were included in the final analytic cohort. Sarcomatoid HCC is identified as a very rare variant of HCC. It is associated with larger tumor size and worse tumor grade on presentation. Patients with sarcomatoid HCC vs those who had conventional HCC had a worse stage-for-stage long-term survival on propensity score matched analyses that controlled for known confounding factors. Multivariable analysis revealed worse outcomes in independent correlation with uninsured status, advanced AJCC stage (stage III/stage IV), and histological sarcomatoid subtype.
