Maculopathy secondary to pentosan polysulfate use: A single-center experience
Clinical Ophthalmology Feb 13, 2021
Kalbag NS, Maganti N, Lyon AT, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for examining the prevalence of retinal pathology in patients with a history of exposure to pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS). The sample consisted of patients aged 18–95 years who had been exposed to PPS and consulted in the Northwestern ophthalmology clinic from January 1, 2002, to January 1, 2019. Visual acuity, clinic visit reasons, ocular conditions, and duration of exposure to PPS have been noted. In total, 131 patients who were exposed to PPS and seen at the Northwestern Ophthalmology clinic were identified in the electronic health records. PPS use has been related to a novel drug-induced maculopathy with a distinct clinical constellation that can be reliably identified with multimodal imaging.
