Lower alpha fetoprotein and higher risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, study from the type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jul 20, 2018
Yang S, et al. - For this investigation, 750 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 800 healthy individuals and 501 patients newly diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were enrolled from 2010 to 2016 to investigate the relationship of T2DM with HCC and alpha fetoprotein (AFP). It was observed that diabetics had a lower geometric mean AFP level than non-diabetics. Researchers found that T2DM was correlated with worse liver function and a higher risk of high-grade HCC. Results of this study suggested that low AFP levels in diabetics could delay and/or interfere with HCC diagnosis.
