Low vs high carbohydrate diet in type 1 diabetes: A 12-week randomized open-label crossover study
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Apr 26, 2019
Schmidt S, et al. - In adults with type 1 diabetes, researchers compared how glycemic control and cardiovascular risk factors are impacted by a low carbohydrate diet (< 100 g carbohydrate/d) vs a high carbohydrate diet (> 250 g carbohydrate/d). Fourteen participants utilizing sensor-augmented insulin pumps were included in this randomized crossover study with two 12-week intervention arms with a 12-week washout in between. The study was completed by 10 participants. Limiting carbohydrate intake to 100 g per day vs 250 g of carbohydrate intake per day, in adults with type 1 diabetes reduced hypoglycemic time, glycemic variability and weight without affecting cardiovascular risk factors. No severe hypoglycemia events were reported and no other cardiovascular risk factors were significantly affected, including lipid fasting levels and inflammatory markers.
