Low dose methotrexate and mucocutaneous adverse events: Results of a systematic literature review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Arthritis Care & Research Jun 07, 2019
Lalani R, et al. - Via performing a systematic literature review and meta-analysis, researchers sought to determine the prevalence of alopecia and stomatitis with methotrexate (MTX) in rheumatic diseases. Searching PubMed, Cochrane Library and CINAHL databases, they identified 3954 studies. Of these, they included 20 RCTs with a total of 24 MTX monotherapy arms, of which 10 reported the prevalence of alopecia (N = 1,113) and 21 reported stomatitis or mouth/oral ulcers (N = 2,056). Alopecia prevalence ranging from 1.0% to 4.9%. Stomatitis had prevalence ranging from 5.7% to 8.0%. These estimates may assist in informed patient decision making regarding MTX.
