Low concordance between HbA1c and OGTT to diagnose prediabetes and diabetes in overweight or obesity
Clinical Endocrinology Jun 07, 2019
Chatzianagnostou K, et al. - In subjects with overweight or obesity, researchers evaluated the concordance between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in the diagnosis of prediabetes and diabetes, concentrating on possible differences in gender. Participants in the study were 949 outpatients with overweight or obesity at risk for diabetes (mean age 50±15 years; 660 F) and had HbA1c test and OGTT. For the diagnosis of diabetes and prediabetes in both genders, HbA1c test and OGTT did not reach full concordance, and the HbA1c test recognized more patients with prediabetes vs OGTT. Different physiopathological elements of dysglycemia are likely represented by the two tests, indicating that the "diagnostic thresholds" might be reconsidered.
