Loss to follow-up among patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy in clinical practice
American Journal of Ophthalmology Mar 26, 2020
Suresh R, Yu H, Thoveson A, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study to ascertain the proportion of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) who were loss to follow up (LTFU). In addition, they examined the predictive factors. They gathered information for 4,423 patients with PDR between April 30, 2012 and April 30, 2017. The population that never returned to care in the study period defined complete LTFU. The population that did not adhere to clinical recommendations, missing scheduled appointments, resulting in longer than 6 months or 1 year between two appointments was referred as interval LTFU. Among 4,423 patients with PDR, 2,407 (54.4%) were complete LTFU at 6 months and 2,320 (52.4%) were complete LTFU at 1 year, respectively; 782 (17.7%) and 468 (10.6%) were interval LTFU for 6 months and 1 year, respectively. For determining interval LTFU status, insurance status was significant. In line with other analyses, results suggest compliance with clinical appointments as a substantial clinical challenge among patients with PDR.
