Longitudinal changes in the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness of patients with type 2 diabetes
JAMA Ophthalmology Oct 17, 2019
Lim HB, et al. - In this investigation involving 164 candidates (mean [SD] age, 58.2 [8.7] years), researchers investigated longitudinal changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness in T2D patients, with or without diabetic retinopathy (DR). The authors discovered the progressive decline of pRNFL thickness in healthy controls and T2D patients without and with DR. However, a greater loss of pRNFL was linked to T2D, irrespective of whether DR was present. Even in the absence of DR progression, pRNFL loss can occur in T2D individuals.
