Longitudinal associations of body mass index, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio with biomarkers of oxidative stress in older adults: Results of a large cohort study
Obesity Facts Mar 04, 2020
Anusruti A, et al. - This study was undertaken to determine if BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were correlated longitudinally with Diacron’s reactive oxygen metabolites test (D-ROM) and total thiol levels (TTL), a marker of antioxidant defense capacity, serum concentrations in a large cohort of older adults (age range: 57–83 years) as this could be an avenue to “healthy aging.” The final sample size for the longitudinal analysis was 1,734 individuals. Healthy body weight seems to be of great importance to human being's antioxidant defense capacity. D-ROM levels, by comparison, were independent of the weight of the study participant. Clinical trials are required to confirm whether weight loss by obese individuals can increase TTL effectively, and subsequently also life expectancy.
