Long-term vitamin-K antagonist use and coronary artery calcification

Herz Oct 04, 2018

Unlu S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how coronary artery calcification (CAC) is influenced by the use of vitamin K antagonist (VKA) therapy. For this purpose, they compared 43 long-term VKA users with metallic prosthetic valves (MPVs) vs 65 VKA-free patients undergoing coronary calcium scoring for cardiovascular (CV) risk stratification. They used computed tomography (CT) to detect CAC and for quantification, the Agatston score was used. Findings demonstrated an association of long-term VKA usage with CAC. The CAC observed in MPV group was primarily attributed to longer and more potent VKA regimen required for these patients.
