Long term surgical outcomes for infective endocarditis in people who inject drugs: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Infectious Diseases Nov 17, 2019
Goodman-Meza D, Weiss RE, Gamboa S, et al. - Via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers sought to ascertain the long-term outcomes in people who inject drugs (PWID) who underwent cardiac surgery for infective endocarditis and compared these outcomes to non-PWID. From 1965 to 2018, they identified 27 studies for inclusion in the systematic review and 19 studies for obtaining data (Kaplan-Meier or individual patient data) for the meta-analysis. Relative to non-PWID, PWID were younger, had S. aureus more frequently and reported a shorter survival.
