Long-term prognosis of women with Brugada syndrome and electrophysiological study
Heart Rhythm Jan 27, 2021
Rodríguez-Mañero M, Jordá P, Hernandez J, et al. - By performing this multicenter retrospective analysis, the clinical features and long-term prognosis of women with Brugada syndrome (BrS) were analyzed. Overall 770 patients were included. Less frequent presentations with a type 1 electrocardiographic pattern, presence of a higher rate of family history of sudden cardiac death and less sustained ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) on electrophysiological study (EPS) were noted among females. In 79 females (45% of the sample), genetic testing was conducted and was positive in 34 (19%). In multivariable analysis, arrhythmic events were predicted by a positive genetic test and atrial fibrillation, whereas VAs on EPS (neither with 1 or 3 extrastimuli nor 3 extrastimuli) were not predictive. Women with BrS were identified as a minor fraction among patients suffering from BrS, and although a low rate of events was reported for them, these do not form a risk-free group. Future arrhythmic events were not predicted by clinical risk factors or EPS. Only atrial fibrillation and positive genetic test conferred risk for future arrhythmic events.
