Long-term prognosis and outcome predictors in Takotsubo syndrome: A systematic review and meta-regression study
JACC: Heart Failure Feb 01, 2019
Pelliccia F, et al. - In this analysis of 54 studies with a total of 4,679 patients (4,077 women and 602 men) with >6 months of follow-up data, researchers evaluated the incidence of long-term adverse outcomes in patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS). These studies were identified from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases, and by reviewing cited references up to March 31, 2018. A median follow-up of 28 months (interquartile range: 23 to 34 months) revealed the death of 464 of 4,567 patients who the survived index admission (103 because of cardiac causes and 351 because of noncardiac issues). Follow-up also revealed TTS recurrence in 104 cases, which equates to a 1.0% annual rate of recurrence, without significant heterogeneity. The factors that were significantly related to long-term total mortality in each study, included older age, physical stressor, and the atypical ballooning form of TTS. Long-term rates of overall mortality and recurrence were not insignificant in patients discharged alive following TTS.
