Long term follow-up of pseudotumor-cerebri syndrome in pre-pubertal children, adolescents and adults

Pediatric Neurology May 01, 2019

Hilely A, et al. - In prepubertal children, adolescents and adults, researchers assessed and compared the long-term course of disease, recurrences and final visual outcomes of pseudotumor-cerebri syndrome (PTCS). In this retrospective observational study involving 65 patients, 23.5% of pre-pubertal children, 50% of adolescents and 28.1% of adults had recurrences. Findings suggested no association of obesity and CSF opening pressures with either relapsing rates or final visual outcomes. In a third of the cases, PTCS presents a relapsing course. Recurrences tend to occur in pre-pubertal children within one year of cessation of treatment and in older patients within three years, thus exhibiting the importance of longer follow-up periods, particularly in adults. In adults, optic neuropathy was more common, along with a visual decline trend. Fewer recurrences were associated with longer treatment times.
